The first hints of autumn
Are the trees flecked with gold
A forewarning of returning
To their brief glory of old
And I sit here in the sunlight
From a sky clear and blue
Like the leaves my thoughts are turning
Turning to you.
To you – in the summer
To you – in the light
To you, in the autumn
To you in the night
Warmth in the winter
Joy in the spring
The years steady turning
Brings summer again
And we’ll be together
As the years run their way
Turning and returning
To you everyday.
As the tree is growing
So assured and so strong
Secure as the seasons
As the years roll along
Each year in its own turn
Brings the green and the gold
The times of bright blossom
The months of dark cold
And so, we also
Grow strong and assured
Secure in our own love
And the love of our Lord
Through the autumns and winters
The summers and springs
Sharing together
Whatever life brings
Till, in its turn, life’s glory is gone
And we’re together
Forever
In the glory beyond.
