Through the silence of a winter night
Past dark bare trees on frozen ground
Came Christmas, silent and secret,
Unseen beneath the diamond stars,
Unnoticed by those it came for,
Cloaked in icy gloom.
Yet bearing a warmth in its heart
Cherishing a light
Keeping a glow of love and hope
Safe, protected from the bitter frost.
Unknown, unrecognized by humankind,
Watched only by wondering angels
Christmas slipped quietly in,
Amongst homes and dwellings.
Stepping in from the winter,
To wake with a child’s cry.
Christmas still takes us by surprise,
Leaving us stressed and breathless
With a rush of present-buying and card-writing.
But its heart is warmth and light,
And hope and joy,
A promise wrapped up in a child’s cry
The greatest surprise of all.
