Poems are a mystery to me. I wouldn't describe myself as a poet - yet some ideas seem to express themselves better in the rhythm, and sometimes the rhyme, of a poem. As with these.
''The View from the Hilltop' is, as explained on the home page, about why I write. I didn't plan a poem on that subject, it just came out that way. And, in a way, 'The Road' is also about why we do what we do, and what life is. Perhaps my deepest thoughts on the subject. Or my daftest. Hard to tell, with poetry!
'The Battle by the Mere' is my first and so far my only attempt at epic poetry. I've tried a few times to write another, but I find it hard to sustain the rhythm and rhyme for a long piece.
''Thoughts at a wedding' are exactly that! Sitting in a corner, looking around at people I hadn't seen for a long time, and people I'd never met before, and musing on how our lives meet, and interact, and move on.
Love is always a great inspiration for poetry! 'Come dance with me', 'Seasons of love' and 'Last weeks red roses ' are some of the poems I've written for Annie, my soul-mate and best friend ever.
'Christmas Surprise' and 'The Sound of Christmas' - well, it's obvious where they came from!
Some poems arise from my faith. 'A Grace', and 'Worship in the woods at Launde Abbey' record encounters with God. Not in any great, earth-shaking way, but just in the course of normal life. A drive in the country, a walk in the woods, and I am reminded of His presence. Indeed, any contemplation of beauty can be the gateway to worship, and the sense of bringing your Soul Home. And all these things can lead to thinking about some pretty deep and serious stuff, as in 'A Contemplation of Mortality'.
Especially so, whilst sitting in a garden and sharing the moment with 'The Bird Whisperer', who inspired two poems! The Silence Man and Being Here.
'Purpose' came out of a session at the Association of Christian Writers AGM. We were brainstorming (or mind -Googling!) the word 'Purpose', and this is what I jotted down. Adrian Plass, the speaker, said he thought it might be a poem. Good enough for me! 'Arthur' is also linked to ACW - the picture was put on the group's Facebook page as a writing prompt.
And for a bit of humour, there's 'Noses'. Inspired by a friend who one day suddenly thought what a strange thing it was to have something sticking out of your face! Or 'Hair Folly', a celebration of freedom from obsession with personal thatching.
